3D Modeling for Mechanical Design Using Inventor

Course | Skill builder
Learn approaches to parametric design and assembly creation that lead to better outcomes.
Outline

Overview

Get prepared to solve real-world challenges by developing advanced skillsets in 3D modeling and the parametric CAD workflow. Build skills in assembly modeling, creating designs with mechanical motion, developing detailed technical drawing for production, and creating animations for presentations using Inventor.

After completing this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the parametric CAD workflow.
  • Identify interface aspects of Inventor.
  • Create frame assemblies.
  • Create designs with mechanical motion.
  • Manipulate appearances and physical materials.
  • Create a detailed drawing.
  • Create and output an animation.

This course was authored using Inventor 2021. You may notice course resources are accessed differently for earlier versions of Inventor. See course resources for more details.

Getting started

~25 min.
Create a new project file
Course Module

Practice creating a new project file and modifying settings.

~2 hr. 15 min.
Create the base frame for the bottle filling station
Course Module

Learn how to create and analyze a frame assembly.

~2 hr. 15 min.
Model the reusable bottle and cap
Course Module

Model the new reusable bottle and cap that will be used with the bottle filling station.

~15 min.
Model the bottle holder carousel parts
Course Module

Model the three parts of the bottle holder carousel based on the supplied design criteria. This includes applying physical materials and appearances.

~15 min.
Model the cam shaft
Course Module

Model the cam shaft, including adding a keyway and a groove for a circlip.

~2 hr.
Assemble the gearbox
Course Module

Create a new assembly file then add a spur gear and cam shaft to the gearbox. The gears will be aligned using work planes and the key, keyway, cam shaft, and spur gear.

~45 min.
Assemble the gearbox, motors, and upper frame to the base frame
Course Module

Now you'll assemble the rotating carousel mechanism. The rotating carousel consists of a bearing ring, supplied motor, gear box, and modeled parts.

~1 hr. 45 min.
Document the bottle filling station
Course Module

Learn how to create drawings of the bottle filling station, including a shaded isometric view, annotated drawings of the lower frame, and a material list.
